Long-term care capacity is growing in southeastern New Brunswick, with the province announcing 40 new nursing home beds will be added at Grass Home in Riverview.
The project is one of the first selected through the provincial government’s expression-of-interest process aimed at creating 360 new long-term care beds across New Brunswick.
According to the Government of New Brunswick, the new beds will help seniors access care closer to home while easing pressure on hospitals.
“Our focus is on making sure New Brunswickers get the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” said Premier Susan Holt in a government news release. Holt said the additional capacity will help seniors move into appropriate care settings when they no longer require hospital care.
Grass Home currently operates 60 beds across two Riverview locations. The expansion will add 40 Level 3G generalist care beds, designed for seniors who require greater assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing and eating. The beds are also suitable for individuals in the early stages of dementia.
Seniors Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau said expanding long-term care options is an important part of supporting an aging population.
“Growing long-term care capacity will help ensure seniors have access to the right kind of care as their needs change, while supporting their dignity and well-being,” Boudreau said in the release.
The province says the additional beds will help strengthen the continuum of care by providing more options for seniors whose care needs have increased.
Ben Grass, executive vice-president of Grass Home, said the organization is pleased to partner with the province on the expansion.
“For more than four decades, our family has been committed to providing seniors with compassionate, home-like care that supports their dignity and quality of life,” Grass said in the release.
The project forms part of the province’s $993-million Seniors and Long-Term Care Plan, which includes funding for 360 new long-term care beds, expanded supports for seniors living at home, and investments in residential long-term care services. The government estimates the addition of the 360 beds will represent an annual investment of approximately $90 million when fully implemented.
Officials say proposals continue to be evaluated under the expression-of-interest process, with projects advancing as they become ready rather than waiting for the entire process to conclude.
