The Moncton Mustangs are out for redemption after losing the MFL title by one point in a season where they never lost a game. The Nova Scotia Buccaneers beat Moncton 29-28 at the end of last season to take the 2023 MFL Championship. As fate would have it, that was the opening matchup of the 2024 MFL season in Cole Harbour.
The Bucs opened the scoring at 7:46 of the first quarter with a TD pass by Mitch Tufts to Toro Gabrielli. The Bucs added two points on the convert with another pass by Tufts, this time connecting with Riley Felix. Moncton replied was close to evening up the score in the 1st with a rushing touchdown from Cameron Morley, but the 2pt attempt failed leaving the Mustangs trailing 8-6 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter the Mustangs defense stepped up limiting the Bucs to one point in the quarter, while the Mustangs offense came to life with TD run by Dylan Waugh, and more points from Kicker Ben George who added four points with a successful PAT and Field Goal. The dominance continued into the second half with Moncton adding another rushing TD and PAT.
The Bucs showed signs of life in the fourth quarter with another TD pass from Mitch Tufts to Riley Felix and a two point convert, but a field goal by Ben George at 12:33 of the fourth capped off the scoring with the Mustangs taking a 26-17 win in game one of the 2024 season.
The Mustangs will stay on the road for game two of the season when they head to Saint john to play the Wanderers at Canada Games Stadium, Saturday May 11th at 4pm.
