Kim Mitchell has many well-known songs, but one summertime anthem stands above them all, Patio Lantern. The song is well-loved for its evocative lyrics and catchy melody, which capture the essence of youthful summertime experiences. The lyrics of “Patio Lanterns” reminisce about teenage parties and the innocence of first loves and youthful summers. The song paints vivid pictures of hanging out on the patio under the titular lanterns, experiencing the awkwardness and excitement of growing up. It’s a celebration of simpler times and summer romance, resonating with many who remember their own experiences of youth. “Patio Lanterns” has become a staple of Canadian classic rock and is often associated with summer and celebratory playlists. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport listeners back to their own carefree days of youth, making it a timeless piece in Kim Mitchell’s repertoire.
So when I asked Kim about where he likes to spend him time in the summer to “get away” I was a little surprised the answer wasn’t “The Patio.” When the time comes for Mitchell to get away from it all, he says he likes to take a walk.
“Getting outside of your head is important, for all of us. It’s really important for us to get out and get out of our heads. ” He continues “For 13 years I had a dog named Webster, and sadly he died 3-weeks ago. So I’m actually a little lost without him. ” Mitchell and Webster would go on 3-4 walks per day so it’s clear they spent much of their time together. Mitchell says he’s still trying to go out on walks and because “we all need that, we all need that time.” He says “I’m not lost, but… you know…”
The name “Webster” is obviously a nod to “Max Webster” the band formed in 1973 in Sarnia, Ontario. The band was initially formed by guitarist and vocalist Kim Mitchell and keyboardist Terry Watkinson. Kim Mitchell is performing April 26th at Casino, NB.
