Moncton, June 15, 2024 – The Moncton Mustangs showcased their dominance in the MFL semi-finals with a commanding 42-14 victory over the Saint John Wanderers at Rocky Stone Field. Despite the rainy and cloudy weather, the Mustangs maintained their undefeated streak, advancing to the finals with a 7-0 record.
Moncton set the tone early, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. David Patry connected with Josh McDonald for an 18-yard touchdown pass, followed by Adryon Thompson’s 76-yard interception return. Ben George successfully converted both PATs, putting Moncton ahead 14-0.
In the second quarter, Saint John responded with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jon Golacki to Alex MacDonald, with Brayden Robinson adding the PAT. However, Moncton quickly regained control with two more touchdown passes from Patry, hitting Benoit Cormier and Cam Morley for scores. George’s consistent kicking extended the lead to 28-7 at halftime.
The Mustangs continued their onslaught in the third quarter. Patry’s 65-yard touchdown run and Josh Armstrong’s 71-yard interception return, with PATs by George and Nick Swain, respectively, enforced the 35-point mercy rule. Saint John managed a late 10-yard touchdown pass from Golacki to Cody Carr in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.
Moncton’s victory secures their spot in the MFL finals, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final matchup between the Fredericton Fleet and the Nova Scotia Buccaneers. The Buccaneers emerged victorious in that game with a score of 43-24.
The Mustangs will look to continue their perfect season and claim the championship title in the upcoming final.
