New Brunswick’s reliance on private nursing services was deemed inefficient by Auditor General Paul Martin, who highlighted a lack of proper monitoring by the province’s health authorities. Martin’s audit, covering almost $174 million in contracts from Jan. 1, 2022, to Feb. 29, 2024, revealed significant spending by the Vitalité Health Network, including $98 million to Canadian Health Labs.
Vitalité conducted internal audits but withheld them from Martin’s office. The audit found payments made without due diligence, including $281,640 in unsupported meal allowances. The Department of Social Development spent $3 million without requests for proposals, and Horizon Health Network’s $48 million spending also lacked proper documentation.
