Jérémy Michel scored twice late in the third period to lead the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus to a 4-3 win over the Dalhousie University Tigers on Saturday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in an Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey game on the Moncton campus.
Jérémy Michel (Marc-André Mercier, Jeremy Lapointe) scored his team’s third goal at 7:40 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. He then scored into an empty net (Nathaniel Roy) at 18:50 when the Tigers pulled their goalie in favor of a forward. That insurance goal became the winner, however, when the Tigers’ Evan MacKinnon beat goaltender Félix-Anthony Éthier at 19:17 to bring his team within one.
Jeremy Lapointe (Thomas Cusson, Jacob Dion) scored first on the power play at 6:05 of the initial period. There were no goals during the balance of the period. Jeremy Lapointe (Edouard St-Laurent, Remy Anglehart) with his second of the night again on the power play made it 2-0 midway through the second. The Tigers then scored twice, Jackson Van de Leest at 10:34 and Joseph Serpa at 12:40 to tie the game before the end of the second. Moncton held a 41 (18-7-16) 23 (5-12-6) advantage on shots on goal and Tigers goaltender Nicholas Chenard was busy throughout the game.
Dalhousie didn’t score on two power plays and Moncton had two on 4 chances. Jeremy Michel was selected as the first star, Jeremy Lapointe as the second and goaltender Nicholas Chenard of the Tigers as the third.
According to player Jérémy Michel, “we had a good challenge at the end. Mercier had a great shot on net for my first goal and the guys worked so hard and it finally went in, and it paid off. Morale is high with two wins. It shows that we are a good team. We’ll have some big training sessions this week to prepare for the two big road games.”
“This win feels good, even if it wasn’t easy,” added Aigles Bleus coach Derek Cormier. “We dominated two periods and we had let down in the second, which cost us two goals. All teams are competitive. Éthier earned his spot tonight and we need two good goaltenders. Jérémy Michel has more confidence, and we have high hopes for this first line.”
Moncton will play two road games next weekend when they visit the Saint Mary’s University Huskies on Friday and the Acadia University Axemen on Saturday. Dalhousie will play host to StFX X-Men on Wednesday evening.
