Moncton, June 17, 2024 – Marc Belliveau, co-chair of the Greater Moncton Homelessness Steering Committee, is urging the community to continue donating to their charity of choice to help during the ongoing heat wave. The committee, composed of local non-profits and homeless service organizations, has implemented a three-tiered approach to address the heat crisis.
Firstly, an additional 120 seats have been added at shelters and community centers to provide relief from the heat and humidity. Secondly, YMCA Reconnect outreach teams are distributing supplies and assisting individuals at tent sites and encampments, facilitating travel to community centers if needed. Lastly, misting tents have been set up at The John Howard Hub and Ensemble Moncton to prevent heat-related illnesses and reduce emergency room visits.
Belliveau emphasizes that financial contributions are the most effective way for the community to support these efforts, allowing the committee to cover costs and leverage their buying power for necessary supplies. If you choose to make a donation of items, they are requesting sunscreen, bottled water and sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade.
Donations can be dropped off at the following locations; Ensemble Moncton – 80 Weldon St, John Howard Society – 15 Flanders Ct, Moncton, Harvest House Atlantic – 182 High St, Moncton, House of Nazareth – 75 Albert St, Moncton, Youth Quest Central – 199 St. George St, YMCA Reconnect – 30 War Veterans Ave, Salvus Clinic – 1116 Mountain Rd Unit 4, United Way Moncton- 22 Church St, St George’s Anglican Church – 51 Church St, Moncton and The Humanity Project – 449 St. George St.
