Dartmouth, June 8, 2024 – The Moncton Mystics secured a heart-stopping 82-80 overtime victory over the Lake City 56ers in a rollercoaster Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) game on Saturday afternoon.
Moncton forced overtime with just eight seconds left in regulation when Lindsay Black scored on a layup following a pair of missed free throws by Lake City, tying the game at 72-72. In the back-and-forth overtime, Courtney Donaldson gave the 56ers a 79-78 lead with 1:48 to play, but Leo Elbert quickly responded, pushing Moncton ahead 80-79. Black, who finished with 14 points, sealed the win with another basket, and Lake City failed to equalize with a missed three-point attempt and putback.
Elbert and Black each scored 14 points for Moncton, with Ali Berry adding 10, and Celine Sterkel, Jenna Jones, and Kelsey McLaughlin each contributing 10 points. Kelly Vass chipped in with nine points.
Donaldson led Lake City with 24 points, followed by Elizabeth Iseyemi with 19 and Lauren Armstrong with 12.
This victory marks Moncton’s second consecutive win, improving their record to 3-5. Lake City, now at 6-3, has lost two straight games. This was the league’s second overtime game of the 2024 season, showcasing the intense competition and excitement in the MWBA.
