
Sophie Black and Alain Lavoie were the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues and Aigles Bleus fastest runners at the Atlantic University Sport Cross Country Championships on Saturday in the Halifax area.
Both the women’s and men’s 8km races saw the leaders post fast times.
On the women’s side, the champion and gold medallist was Emily Doucet of the University of New Brunswick Reds in 31m11s. Allie Sandluck of the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women was second one second behind the champion and the bronze went to Eileen Benoit of the X-Women in 31m12s as well.
The fastest of the Aigles Bleues was Sophie Black in 16th position in 32m55s; Hannah Levyssohn 17th in 33m23s; Annie Clarke 34th in 35m07s; Amélie Cormier 46th in 37m45s; Gabrielle Côté 47th in 37m53s and Elizabeth Vigneau 48th in 37m55s. There were 53 runners at the start line. In the team standings, gold went to the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women, followed by the UNB Reds and Dalhousie University Tigers. The Aigles Bleues finished in 6th position.
Jacob Lavoie of the Dalhousie Tigers was first to the finish line in 25m34s for gold in the men’s race. The Reds’ Jared Howse was second in 25m48s followed by teammate William Boyle in 26m26s. The X-Men’s Joel Gallant was 4th. Alain Lavoie of the Aigles Bleus was 31st in 29m16s; Julien Thibodeau 32nd in 29m39s; Yannick Dupuis 35th in 30m15s; Pascal LeBlanc 42nd in 32m04s; Olivier Godin 45th in 35m10s and Félix Gautreau 46th in 45m49s. There were 46 runners in the competition.
In the team standings, the Aigles Bleus finished 7th. The UNB Reds are first, followed by the St. Francis Xavier X-Men and Dalhousie University Tigers.
Hannah Levyssohn won the Student/Athlete Award for Community Service at the AUS Individual Awards presentation.
“We were able to have two women in the top-20, and we’re happy to have a 6th place finish for the women’s team,” said coach Steve LeBlanc. “I’m very happy with the efforts of the Aigles Bleues. For the men, the goal was to have two athletes in the top-30 and we were almost there with 31st and 32nd. The goal was to beat UPEI; we didn’t make it, but it was a great effort.”
